How to take care of hair in winter

17 Feb

Taking care of your hair during Winter is challenging, isn’t it? As I was living in tropical place, Gujarat does not have harsh winter as we have here in Germany.

After coming here I never thought that my hair will need special care in cold months, but after some time I noticed damage in my hair. Therefor, I started looking for hair care products, what to do and what not to do in freezing temperatures.

With help of the internet, I tried many things and from my own experience, here I am sharing basic winter hair care tips and products that I found very helpful.

Avoid frequent washing:

Try to stop yourself from taking frequent head baths, only once or twice per week to keep your hair moisturized. Shampoo cleanses your hair and scalp, but it also strips off natural oil and that causes more dryness. Make yourself comfortable in greasy hairs with different hairstyles. If you have oily scalp, use good quality dry shampoo between washes.

Avoid heat:

Our hair is not at its best during cold months, heating tools make hair more brittle which causes breakage and split ends. Try to avoid heating tools as much as possible and if you must, use heat protective serum.

Do not wash your hair with hot water as it removes moisture from your hair. Use warm water for showers and keep your shower shorter (it’s good for your hair and also for the environment, double benefit !!)

Don’t skip conditioner:

Conditioner is an important part of the hair care routine. A good conditioner can make your hair hydrated and nourished. Choose a conditioner depending on your hair type.

Cover hair when heading outside:

Cold and dry air can damage your hair that is why you should always cover your hair when heading out. You can cover up your hair with silk or satin scarf to prevent friction from cotton and woolen material.

Massage with oil:

Who doesn’t like head massage, right? Treat yourself with warm oil hair massage to moisturize your scalp and hair. This helps to reduce dryness, irritation and dandruff. I personally use extra virgin olive oil with few drops of vitamin E oil or sometimes Almond oil (be sure to use good quality products without any artificial smell or color!!!)

TIP: Use food quality oils, they are normally in pure form.

Make surrounding humid:

Invest in a good humidifier (it works as a room fragrance as well if you add a few drops of your favorite oil). Heater gives warmth on cold days but it also makes air dryer in your home and that will affect your hair. Humidifier helps in balancing moisture in your room.

Eat healthy:

Protein and vitamin rich food are beneficial for hair health. Omega-3 fatty acid keeps your hair healthy and shiny. You should eat omega-3 rich food and if needed, you may take supplements. Flax seeds, Walnuts, Chia seeds, Carrots, Leafy green vegetables and berries are good for hair.

Don’t go out with wet hair:

Always dry your hair before going out. Wet hair exposed to cold wind weakens the hair, which can cause breakage. It is a good idea to wash your hair in the evening, so it can be dry the next day before heading out.

Deep conditioning:

A good moisturizing hair mask will make a whole lot of difference to your hair. Choose a mask with good nourishing ingredients like argon oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, honey or any kind of natural ingredient which is good for hair health.

Night care:

Wear a satin or silk bonnet or wrap your hair in a silk scarf to prevent friction between your hair and pillow. If you do not like your hair to be wrapped, you can also buy silk pillow covers. For extremely dry hair, apply a little bit of oil before going to sleep.

Regular trimming:

Trim your hair at least once in two months to keep your hair healthy. Trimming reduces frizziness, levels uneven strands and promotes healthy growth.
